Best Places to Visit in Kashmir
From Dal Lake to the valleys of Pahalgam — the places that belong on a first Kashmir itinerary.
Srinagar and Dal Lake
Most Kashmir trips begin on the water. A night on a houseboat and an early shikara ride past the floating vegetable market set the tone. On land, the Mughal gardens of Nishat and Shalimar are at their best from spring to autumn.
Gulmarg
A high meadow ringed by forest, Gulmarg is known for its gondola, which climbs in two stages towards Mount Apharwat. In winter it becomes one of India's main ski areas; in summer it is green and open.
Pahalgam
Pahalgam sits along the Lidder river. Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari are its best-known viewpoints, reached by local union vehicles. It is also a base for the Amarnath Yatra in season.
Sonamarg
The 'meadow of gold' is a day trip from Srinagar, with the Thajiwas glacier within reach. It works well as a fourth stop if you have an extra day.
Doodhpathri and Yusmarg
Quieter meadows closer to Srinagar, good for travellers who want fewer crowds and a slower day.
Planning tips
April to October suits sightseeing; December to February is for snow. Note that prepaid mobile SIMs from outside Jammu & Kashmir don't work in the region, so bring a postpaid connection.
