Ayodhya Travel Guide
Darshan, ghats and practical tips for a pilgrimage to the birthplace of Lord Ram.
Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir
The temple at the heart of Ayodhya receives very large numbers of devotees every day. Phones, bags and electronic items are not permitted inside the complex, and lockers are provided. Early mornings are usually calmer.
Hanuman Garhi
A hilltop temple reached by steps, traditionally visited before darshan of Lord Ram.
Kanak Bhawan and Dashrath Mahal
Kanak Bhawan is associated with Sita and known for its images of Ram and Sita wearing gold crowns. Dashrath Mahal is linked with King Dashrath's royal palace.
The Saryu ghats
Ram ki Paidi is a series of ghats along the Saryu, beautifully lit in the evenings. The Saryu Aarti is a highlight of any visit. Guptar Ghat, a little upstream, is quieter.
Getting there
Ayodhya has its own airport and a railway station, Ayodhya Dham Junction. Lucknow is a convenient alternative gateway, a few hours by road.
When to go
October to March. Ram Navami and Deepotsav around Diwali are spectacular, but stays book up months in advance.
