Best Time to Visit Leh-Ladakh
Ladakh has a short, sharp travel season. Here's how the months differ, and which one suits your trip.
The short answer
For most travellers, the best time to visit Ladakh is from May to September. The high passes that connect Leh to Nubra and Pangong are generally open, days are sunny and flights are frequent.
May and early June
The season opens. Snow still lines the passes and Pangong may have ice at its edges in early May. Crowds are lighter and the air is crisp, but nights are cold and some roads may still be under snow clearance.
Late June to August
Peak season. Everything is open, including the roads from Manali and Srinagar, and the weather is at its warmest. It is also the busiest time, so stays at Pangong and Nubra fill quickly. Ladakh receives little monsoon rain, which makes it a good summer option when much of India is wet.
September
Many people's favourite month. The crowds thin, the light turns golden and the skies are often at their clearest. Nights grow colder, especially at Pangong, and some camps begin to close towards the end of the month.
October to April
Winter in Ladakh is harsh and beautiful, with temperatures far below freezing. Leh is still reachable by air, and winter trips such as the Chadar trek or snow leopard tracking attract experienced travellers. It is not the season for a standard sightseeing holiday.
Whatever month you choose
Plan a full rest day on arrival. Leh sits at around 3,500 metres, and acclimatisation matters more than any itinerary. Our Leh-Ladakh Adventure is built around this.
