Golden Triangle India Guide

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur for first-timers — the route, the timing and the details that trip people up.

Why it's called the Golden Triangle

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur sit at the corners of a rough triangle, each a few hours apart by good roads. Together they cover Mughal and Rajput India, making it the classic first trip for visitors.

Delhi

Spend a day across two cities. Old Delhi has the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the lanes of Chandni Chowk. New Delhi has India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar.

Agra

The Taj Mahal is best at sunrise, before the crowds and the heat. Agra Fort is worth a few hours, and Mehtab Bagh across the river gives a quiet sunset view of the Taj. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

Jaipur

Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal are the highlights. Evenings are for bazaars.

How long do you need?

Five nights is comfortable. Four is possible but tiring. Add Varanasi, Ranthambore or Udaipur if you have more time.

First-timer tips

Winter mornings can be foggy in Delhi and Agra, which can delay trains and flights. Carry some cash for small purchases, dress modestly for religious sites and keep a scarf handy.
