The North East still feels like a discovery. Meghalaya's hills are wet, green and cut by waterfalls; its villages have grown bridges from living tree roots over generations.
This route moves from Shillong's cafés to the cliffs of Cherrapunji, the clear Umngot river at Dawki and finally to the grasslands of Kaziranga for a jeep safari among one-horned rhinos.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Guwahati to ShillongShillong
Pickup at Guwahati and drive to Shillong, stopping at Umiam Lake on the way.

Day 2: Shillong sightseeingShillong
Elephant Falls, the Don Bosco Museum, Ward's Lake and the Police Bazaar area.

Day 3: Shillong to CherrapunjiCherrapunji
Drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra) for Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave and the Seven Sisters Falls. The Double Decker root bridge trek is optional for fit travellers.

Day 4: Dawki and MawlynnongShillong
Day trip to Dawki for a boat on the Umngot river, then Mawlynnong village and its root bridge. Return to Shillong.

Day 5: Shillong to KazirangaKaziranga
A long drive to Kaziranga through Assam's tea country. Evening at leisure.

Day 6: Kaziranga safariKaziranga
Jeep safari in one of the park's ranges, looking for rhino, wild water buffalo, elephant and swamp deer. Afternoon at the orchid park or tea gardens.

Day 7: Departure from GuwahatiGuwahati
Drive to Guwahati for your onward flight, with a stop at Kamakhya Temple if time allows.

Best time to visit
October to April. Kaziranga is typically open from November to April, and the Umngot river is clearest in the drier winter months.

- Kaziranga season
- The park usually closes during the monsoon (roughly May to October). Outside the season, we replace the safari with Assam and Meghalaya alternatives.
- Walking
- The Double Decker root bridge trek involves a few thousand steps each way. It is optional.
- Weather
- Meghalaya is among the wettest places on earth. Carry rain gear in every season.
- Getting there
- Fly into Guwahati (GAU), well connected to major Indian cities.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need permits?
Not for Meghalaya and Assam as planned here. Arunachal Pradesh or Nagaland extensions require permits, which we can arrange.
Can we add Tawang or Kaziranga for longer?
Yes. We plan longer North East circuits on request.
Is the food vegetarian-friendly?
Yes, though local cuisine is largely meat-based. Hotels offer vegetarian options.
Is this suitable for families?
Yes, with the root bridge trek kept optional.
